Before you Arrive:
Our location is OFF THE GRID and OFF THE BEATEN PATH! Bring drinking water and your cooler with fresh ice for cold food storage. The cabin is heated with a propane furnace, and you may also light a fire in the wood stove. There are some battery operated lights, as well as propane lights mounted in the living room and bedroom. We just added a few solar powered lights. Please see information below for lighting the propane lights AND the wood stove. They are not complicated, but you need to know the proper steps to assure safety and care of the fixtures.
We will inform you of the lockbox code prior to your arrival. We will need your basic information and the license plate number of the vehicle you are driving before you arrive. (This is required by Lake County), and we’d like to know if you are traveling with a dog. You may want to pack house shoes or slippers due to the concrete floor.
IN RESPONSE TO COVID-19:
We are using quality disinfectant cleaning products and following airbnb’s cleaning protocols for your protection.
ONSITE TRAILS MAP:
How to switch spigot/faucet:
Should the battery run low on the spigot (for water supply) lift the spigot unit out of the PVC pipe holder, carefully remove (but hold onto) the top end of the water tube, and hook the backup - charged - spigot (located in the tall cabinet) onto the water tube.
How to remove/replace drain water buckets under the sink:
We hope you enjoy your stay, and please feel free to contact us at any time.
Be sure buckets do not fill beyond the marked FILL line,
2. Without bumping the pvc pipes (if possible) tip bucket back to remove.
3. Tip empty bucket under pipe to replace the one that was removed.
4. Dump bucket as far from the cabin as possible. Anywhere in the woods or into woods along driveway.
How to light Propane Lamps:
As shown in the video, the steps to lighting the propane lamps are
1. Light match (or long butane lighter)
2. Without touching the fine netting (mantel) with match or lighter, hold flame under mantel
3. Turn the lever to “on” position (starts propane flow to lamp). It will “POP” on.
To turn off, simply turn the lever completely to “off” position
Solar Panels and Controls: Depending upon how sunny it has been, the batteries may or may not charge for additional lighting use. The red box should be turned on (with a green light) when batteries are operational. If light is flashing, and E01 is showing on the readout, the batteries are low or dead and enough sunlight will need to regenerate the system. If the panels get covered with snow in the winter, you may GENTLY brush them off with the broom (in shed).
Changing the Batteries in the Large Camp Lamp: Over the table, so chamber does not fall out on floor, carefully remove bottom by twisting slightly, then pulling out chamber to replace batteries. Chamber only fits one way, so you can see how it will go back in again…
How to Light the Wood Stove
When you light the wood stove, be sure the damper is turned to the open position, (a coil handle for which the VERTICAL position - not at an angle - is OPEN on our stove) then use some birch bark or paper (lit) to warm the flue: Hold the lit material up the chimney. This will allow it to draw smoke and create the updraft needed to get the fire started without getting too much smoke backed up into the cabin. Have your kindling stacked in a teepee shape or “box” shape before warming the flue. Once the chimney is warm, you can light the wax fire starter or paper under the kindling. Let the fire get established before adding logs. Because this is a wood stove (not a fireplace) you need only a couple of logs at a time.
